Recognizable?

Why are there cookies in the first place, and what do they do? We get that question quite often at Laméco. Time for a little blog with good explanation. Starring this blog, one of the oldest cafes in Eindhoven.

Your favorite cafe 🐻

Imagine you know a favorite brown café that you go to regularly (for example, Café de Beer in Eindhoven). When you enter, the manager -Hennie- immediately recognizes you and knows that you always order a beer in a flute with a bowl of bitterballen. She even remembers the newspaper you like to read and puts it on your table as soon as you enter. How does she do that? By paying close attention and making notes in a little notebook.

How do cookies work? 🍪

Cookies function on your Web site or Web application in a similar way, but digitally. When you visit a Web site, the site places a "cookie" on your device, similar to a digital waiter taking notes. This cookie stores information such as the pages you visited, how long you stayed on the site or (sometimes) the items you placed in a shopping cart. This data is then used to better serve you the next time you visit the site.

What things can be organized with cookies? 🕵️

Cookies play a role in the (among others) following scenarios:

  1. User experience: They enable personalized user experiences. Think of recommendations on Bol, where you see products that match your previous purchases.
  2. Login data: Cookies keep you logged in to Web sites so you don't have to enter your username and password over and over again.
  3. Shopping carts: They remember what you put in your shopping cart, even if you close the website and come back later.
  4. Analytics: Websites (and online marketers) use cookies to understand how users use their site, which helps improve the site and provide more relevant content.

Privacy and Cookies 🔒

While cookies offer many benefits, they have also led to concerns about privacy and data protection. Just as in a café you don't want Hennie to know all your personal information and -perhaps more importantly- remember everything, many people don't want websites to know too much about them.

This has led to stricter regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG) in the European Union. Under these rules, websites must ask permission before they can set certain types of cookies, such as those for targeted ads.

Control 🛂

Cookies are like digital notes that help websites serve you better, similar to how a waiter at your favorite café remembers your preferences. They are crucial to the modern online experience, but have also led to privacy concerns. It is important that websites be transparent about how they use cookies and that users have control over their cookie preferences.

Is cookie notification required?

Short answer: It depends on the cookies.

Analysis and functional cookies usually do not require this. What is important here is that the cookie has no or little invasion of the visitor's privacy.

For tracking cookies, permission is always required. These are cookies that track and store individual visitor behavior.

Websites can also process personal data when placing a cookie, for example, the website or my environment of a bank. The General Data Protection Regulation(AVG) applies to these cookies.

Notification and consent

Depending on the type of cookies, a notification (opt-in) must be given. You usually see this in the form of a notification or cookie bar. A more comprehensive (and hopefully more up-to-date than our blog ;)) explanation can best be found on the website of the central government.

As of March 2024, there are even stricter rules regarding cookies and advertising. Read more about this in our blog: Google Consent Mode V2
