What keywords should I use?

With the content tips under your belt, you can of course get fanatical about your content. But which keywords do you use? A common question I encounter as an online marketer.

What keywords should I use?

We always do a keyword research prior to an online marketing project. This can be multilingual and is based on various keywords and keyword groups. But what if you want to get started yourself? Then of course it is convenient if you can quickly check whether people are now searching more on, for example, "make websites" or "make website". Google Ads' "Keyword Planner" is a handy tool for checking search volumes. A few months ago, you could easily see the difference between "making websites" and "website making" in the Keyword Planner. Unfortunately, Google is getting smarter and smarter and making it harder and harder for online marketers. Almost all singular and plural forms are now the same for Google. Further on in this blog, you'll see a good example of that.

In this blog, I explain step by step how to make the best use of the Keyword Planner. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Step 1. Create a Google account

If you do not already have a Google or Google Ads account you need to create one. You can easily register at https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?hl=nl.

Step 2. Log in and go to Google Ads

If you have a Google account (or have just created one) go to Google Ads. Via http://ads.google.com/keywordplanner you will be taken directly to the Google Ads Keyword Planner. Tip from me, add it to your favorites so you can always quickly check a keyword.

Step 3. Enter your keyword(s)

You'll see the screen below. Choose the top option to start entering keywords right away.

You can now enter as many keywords as you know. Try to use as many synonyms and variants as possible. It can make a big difference in search volume. Destination page and product category you do not need to fill in, this makes no difference in the results. The only details that matter are country and language.

Step 4. The results

Since this blog was first written in 2014, we can now demonstrate a nice difference in the results. For example, in the first example from 2014, you can see that "website making" is searched much more than "website making". In the second example from November 2016, you can see that Google has merged both keywords into 1 result.

Note: when you want to optimize texts for the search engine, the columns "Competition" and "Suggested bid" are of no use. This is because these two columns refer to Google Ads (competitors).

Among the keywords you enter, synonyms and similar words are displayed by Google. This way, you might come up with even more ideas. Notice that the searches are getting longer, the so-called trend in long tail keywords. This is immediately a tip to include in your keyword research!

Then you can start targeting a keyword you want to focus on. The most important thing here is "Focus and Relevance". Choose one word or word combination on which you are going to optimize a page.

DON'T BE BLINDED BY THE GOOGLE ADS KEYWORD PLANNER

The Google Keyword Planner is a great tool for getting a quick picture of search volume. Note that there are many other factors. For example, on Google Trends you can see the periods when certain words are searched for and you can also see it from a year back. Google Trends, as the name implies, keeps track of all trends in the search behavior of Internet users.
