How long does Google take to index my website?

You just got a new website and want it indexed by Google as soon as possible so you can be found quickly on the Internet. On average, this takes about 4 days to 1 month. That is quite a long period but there are also an awful lot of websites on the Internet that need to be indexed one by one!

Google is incredibly busy

There are more than 3.5 billion Web pages on the Internet! Of course, it is impossible for Google to monitor all of them every day. In addition to all the new websites that are added daily, all existing websites must also be checked for changes. Therefore, it may take a while before your website is up. The indexing of websites remains in flux and changes every day. Google's algorithm keeps evolving and sometimes changes twice a day!

Tips for faster indexing from Google

If you have a new website and want it to be indexed as soon as possible, there are a few actions you can take to speed up the process.

Sitemap
The first action is to use Google's Search Console. Once your Web site is verified, you can add a sitemap. A sitemap tells Google how the structure of the website is put together and therefore how your website can best be scanned. In addition to Search Console, you can also indicate in the robots.txt where the sitemap can be found.

The right technique
In addition, the technique of a Web site also affects the speed of indexing. Most sites can be easily indexed but there are instances when JavaScript or Flash links, for example, can block them.

Crawl maximum
Every website is given a certain crawl maximum by Google that indicates how many pages are crawled each day. So it is important to indicate which URLs do not need to be crawled. This ensures that the most important pages are crawled more often. In the robots.txt you can indicate which pages do not need to be crawled.

Cross linking
Finally, you can make use of links on social media and other websites. For example, by writing blogs and sharing them on social media, your website gets noticed faster. Google also sees that other websites are linking to your page, making your website seem "more important" than without these links. Indexing can thus be faster than normal.

So how much time does Google need?

Unfortunately, we cannot give a simple answer to this. We know from experience that it can sometimes take months before you see any results in, for example, an increase in your organic positions. So the key is to be patient and make it as easy as possible for Google to crawl your site!
