Brilliant backlog management

A brilliantly managed backlog provides clarity, priority and streamlined execution of the development process. In this blog, we'll explain how to brilliantly manage a backlog.

What is a product backlog?

A product backlog is a list of everything we want to develop within a project or sprint. This could be enhancements, bug fixes or tasks that still need to be performed. This list is constantly updated and prioritized by the product owner, often in collaboration with the development team and stakeholders.

These roles are part of the Scrum team, part of Agile working. Want to know more about Scrum? Then read our blog:'Working according to Scrum'.

How can you keep track of a backlog? You can keep track of the backlog on Post-its, but usually we choose Trello or Jira.

How does a product backlog become brilliant? 🤩

In summary, make sure the development team is always working on the tasks that add the most value to the project.

A product backlog also helps keep project goals focused and achievable, while providing flexibility to respond to changing requirements and priorities. It is therefore important to keep a good record of Product Backlog Items (PBI).

What do you achieve with a good backlog?

  • Transparency:
All team members have insight into what is coming and what the priorities are.
  • Focus:
Prioritizing items allows the team to focus on what is really important.
  • Flexibility:
Quick adjustments to the backlog allow teams to respond to market changes or user feedback.
  • Predictability:
It helps estimate timelines and resources needed for future tasks.

What is a Scrum Product Backlog Item (PBI)? 💡

Earlier we explained a Product Backlog and you saw the term PBI come up. But what are Product Backlog Items? A Product Backlog Item is like a building block in the development of a product. It represents a specific piece of work that is critical to the growth or improvement of the product. This can be anything from adding new gadgets to fixing bugs and improving usability. Each PBI is meticulously placed in the product backlog, where it acts as the signpost for our development team.

By regularly reviewing and updating the PBIs, we can focus on the most valuable tasks. This makes our product development successful!

Tips for brilliant backlog management:

Managing a backlog doesn't have to be difficult if you follow these tips:

1. Prioritize tasks.

Regular backlog sessions are essential. During these sessions, tasks are reviewed, reprioritized and, if necessary, broken down into smaller, more manageable items. This ensures that the backlog stays current and that the most critical items are ready for development.

2. Clear descriptions.

Each item in the product backlog should have a clear description along with well-defined acceptance criteria. This ensures that everyone on the team understands what is expected and when an item can be considered complete.

3. Use of story points or time estimates

Assigning story points or creating time estimates for each product backlog item helps with planning and prioritization. This gives insight into the workload and helps estimate what is feasible for the next sprints.

4. Stakeholders

Actively involve stakeholders in the backlog management process. This input is valuable for validating priorities and aligning project goals with business strategy.
